GWR train manager assessment
London Paddington to the West Country, South Wales and the Cotswolds
- Train Manager
- Conductor
- On-board Customer Host · commercial
GWR sets out more of its process in the advert itself than most operators do. A situational judgement test comes first, straight after you apply. Practice material follows, and the online tests themselves arrive seven days after that — applicant accounts describe four of them: numerical, ticket checking, concentration and rules.
The assessment day comes next, with group exercises, and the competency interview follows it for the candidates who get through. That order matters: earlier accounts had the interview first, and it appears to have changed.

The GWR selection stages
This is not an official GWR process description. Your invitation letter is the authority for your own.
- 01Online application
- 02Online situational judgement test
- 03Practice material, then the online tests seven days later — applicant accounts describe numerical, ticket checking, concentration and rules
- 04Assessment day, including group exercises
- 05Competency-based interview for those who get through the day
- 06Medical including colour vision and drug and alcohol screening, plus a basic DBS check
Detail
Worth knowing about GWR
- Applicant accounts describe a limit of two lifetime attempts at the online tests. GWR does not publish that; what its advert does say is that it checks its database for your previous test results when a vacancy closes, which is at least consistent with results being kept. Either way, treat your first sitting as the one that counts.
- GWR On-board Customer Host is commercial rather than safety-critical: an online assessment, an assessment centre including group activities, a one-to-one interview, then a medical with drug and alcohol screening and a basic DBS check.
- GWR moves into public ownership on 13 December 2026. Its careers pages are currently hosted by FirstGroup, so expect the links — and possibly the process plumbing — to change around then.
Practice
What to practise for GWR
Matched to the stages above. Every demo is free and needs no account.
Rules & Procedures
Learn a short set of unfamiliar rules, then apply them accurately under time pressure.
Ticket Checking
Decide, fast, whether a ticket is valid for the passenger in front of you.
Fares & Numeracy
Excess fares, change, percentages and timetable arithmetic — in your head, at pace.
Situational Judgement
On-train situations with no perfect answer — judge what you would actually do.
What we do not cover
- A concentration test — timed sheets of symbols to scan and mark — is part of this process and is not practised on this site.
Every process on this list ends in a competency interview. Our guide to the interview and the role play covers the competencies operators assess and how to structure an answer, and the process guide sets out every stage across the sector.
Before you apply elsewhere
Not every operator has an on-board grade
If you are comparing operators, these run driver-only services and have no conductor or guard job to apply for:
- c2c
- Driver-only operation on the London, Tilbury and Southend route. No conductor or guard grade.
- Elizabeth line
- Driver-only operation. The concession changed hands in May 2025 and is now run by GTS Rail Operations; its frontline grades are customer and revenue roles, not a conductor grade.
- London Overground
- Driver-only. The concession passed to First Rail London in May 2026, but the brand and the six named lines are unchanged, and the frontline grades are station and revenue roles.
- Heathrow Express
- Driver-only, and run by GWR under a management contract, so its train crew hiring goes through GWR rather than Heathrow Express itself.
- Thameslink and Great Northern
- No conductor or guard grade — these run driver-only. Both do advertise a Passenger Host grade, which is revenue, customer and security work without door or dispatch duties. Southern, in the same group, is different — see its page.
- Freight operators
- Freight trains have not carried guards since single-manning in the 1980s. Note the naming trap: GB Railfreight advertises “Train Manager” and “Trainee Train Manager” vacancies that are train driver roles, and asks for a driver psychometric pass within the last five years.
